Yes, we had a very heavy demand from August 2008 to January 2009. Deteriorating conditions at the General Hospital where patients are now asked to provide there own medicines has become quite a big problem for the poorer patients. Apart from this, it seems the trend nowadays is for the doctors to ask the patients to go through various tests and get the results before they provide the advice. These tests invariably have to be done at private places and are very costly.

So, a New Year has dawned and what better way to welcome it than to welcome our visitors from Germany. As usual, the highlight was the Annual Sponsored children’s Trip which took place from the 16th of January for 3 days at the “Sudu Araliya” Hotel at Polonnaruwa. To say that those 3 days were memorable is an understatement!!.

Can I have some water please?
No, it is not a routing request from a customer in a hotel!!!!. It is a desperate plea from 165 young school children from a school in Kurunagela District. Yes, may be you can’t believe, but they have no water at the school and have to bring from home, (some stay very far away and most have to walk long distances [no, they don’t have transport!!!]) the water required for drinking and for toilet purposes etc.

Another eventful period was recorded from April to August. The highlight was the presentation of a “Suction Machine” to the Ragama General Hospital Costing Rs. 25,500. An urgent need for this piece of vital equipment was conveyed to us and we were happy to oblige. See picture attached. Yes, it is indeed a heart warming thought that every time this vital piece of equipment is being used (it is used many times a day) the name of Ward 25 Group with it’s magnificent sponsors will be remembered and blessings thereof transmitted to them. The second monthly Diabetic camp as detailed in Newsletter No 16 is in full swing now. In fact, the word has got round about our success and we are being requested to conduct a 3rd Monthly Medical Camp!!!!! Well, we are considering it, funds permitting.

It is a sad fact of life in Sri Lanka that many children go to school without having a proper breakfast. There have been many instances where they actually fainted in school due to lack of food. We were very concerned about this and together with our sister organization, Ward 25 Group Germany, originated a project to at least temporarily find a solution to this sad and tragic problem.

The dawn of the year 2008 brought in a hive of activities for the Ward 25 Group. Our friends from Germany were with us for the whole of January. The highlight was and is, the sponsored children “4 Day Residential Trip” to Rathnapura. With a mandatory trip to Sinharaga Heritage Forest and a visit to a Gem Mining pit, Tea factory and Bopathalle Waterfall, the stay was, as always, a memorable one.
